How To Tell If Your Butane Lighter Is Leaking Fuel

A butane lighter can be a great investment. After all, these lighters are typically very durable, offer a variety of styles and options, and come in a number of types that are perfect for almost any scenario. Whether you are a smoker or just someone who needs a reliable lighter for the family barbecue or for lighting the campfire, the right butane lighter can be perfect for your needs. But what if you suspect that your lighter might be leaking? How can you tell if this is the case and what should you do if it turns out to be true?

If you need to know whether one of your lighters is leaking, the best thing that you can do is simply to put the can of butane firmly on the fill valve, start filling it with fuel, and listen closely for the sound of any hissing from the fuel leaking out. If this is the case, you have certainly got a leak and need to send the device to the manufacturer for repair or get a new one. Leaking fuel is certainly nothing to toy with and can be very dangerous.

If you use Zippo style lighters, looking for leaks can be harder. If these devices leak, it is typically visible when the device is laying on its side. A leak will cause fluid to come out of the device, creating a film on the table or other surface that it is sitting on. Much like with the other lighter types, if you notice a leak in your Zippo, it needs to be sent in for repairs. This repair cannot be done at home, and dismantling the device will void the company's lifetime warranty, which is certainly not worthwhile.

If you use disposable lighters, the problem is even simpler. If you notice a leak in one of these lighters, you will likely be able to feel the source. These lighters are designed to be cheap so that they can be thrown away after use, and if yours has a leak that is exactly what you need to do. In any of these circumstances, you should stop using the item immediately.

Leaking lighters can present a fire and safety hazard and should never be used. Throw the device away or bleed out any remaining fuel and send it to the manufacturer so that there is no danger to you or to others.
