How To Teach Children Money Management

By:

In todays world, to teach children money management alone is not enough. Parents must also teach them about effectively managing credit and debts as well. Starting kids out in this endeavor with cash is fine, but because the world now runs on credit cards and debit cards, electronic funds transfers and other means of virtual transactions, it is imperative that the instruction soon switches to credit and debt management.

One of the best features of a credit card is the credit limit they impose; they are not meant to punish people, but it is a way of a creditor to suggest how much money they feel the card holder can safely manage, according to income, other expenses and previous credit history (if there is any credit history). In order for kids to effectively manage their money, they will have to start learning to think ahead, reserve money for things they know they will want to spend money on in the future, and they will learn that in order to be rewarded with a higher credit limit, they are going to have to be responsible and make their payments on time, every time.

When kids only have a limited amount of money to work with, they learn the value of it. They will also come to learn that if they have reached their credit limits, the only way to be able to use the card further is if they make payments to lower the balance. This will teach them the work value of expenses too! They will see that in order to have more to spend, they will have to get a job, which is always a good thing! It wont take long for kids to learn the importance of budgeting and planning when they only have a limited amount at their disposal.

Companies who offer these cards have taken care to design the account features according to the typical habits of teens, and they offer many perks that regular credit card accounts may not. For example, parents may be able to link their bank accounts to their childs credit account to cover amounts that go over the credit limit. They may also opt not to do this. Also, cards may offer a points reward system, where the child can earn points not only for purchases they make, but also for paying their bills on time and being responsible with their accounts. Credit cards and pre paid debit cards are excellent tools when you want to teach children money management skills.
