How To Take The Hassle Out Of Moving Your Home Insurance

By:

Is there anyone out there that can honestly say they enjoy moving? Really? For most people moving is a giant headache cleverly blended with lots and lots of boxes and burly moving men. Hours spent packing. Even more hours spent unpacking. On the whole, moving is a giant pain!

Moving your home insurance shouldn't be.

The good news is, moving your home insurance to your new home is much, much easier than moving that giant, oversized, overstuffed fold-out couch that weighs a ton and came directly from your Great Aunt Melba's house. As a matter of fact, unlike the couch (which, coincidentally, is probably going to take at least 3 of you to move!) your new home insurance policy is just a quick phone call away.

If you're moving to an apartment:

If you're moving to a new apartment you're gold. You've got it easy. As a matter of fact, you're about to be the envy of moving victims (ah, relocating citizens) everywhere! Why? Because moving your renters insurance from one apartment to another is as simple as picking up the phone, calling your insurance company and changing your address. After all, you've already updated all of your coverage levels. All you have to do now is update the where.

You have updated your home insurance levels, right? If not, while everything's strewn from one end of the house to the other is the perfect time to start!

If you're moving to a condo:

Moving to a condo gives you the best of both worlds. You don't have a lawn to maintain, but you have the privilege and pleasure of knowing that your home is yours, all yours and nobody else's-a good feeling after you've been hanging around in apartments for a while! Home insurance for condos is a little different from home insurance for apartments, but with a little tweaking you should be able to make it work.

The important thing to remember is that while your condo association is going to have insurance coverage for the grounds and the outside of the building, that's where their responsibility ends. The minute you slide into that little space between the exterior and interior walls, it's all up to you. Make sure you include the cost for repairing those walls, as well as your floors, ceilings, light fixtures and appliances, when you pick up your new home insurance policy.

If you're buying a house:

Congratulations! Buying your first house is a huge accomplishment-and getting it paid off is even better! Along with that mortgage payment you're taking on a huge responsibility when it comes to the care and maintenance of your house, and you want to make sure your home insurance is up to the task.

As soon as possible after you move (you don't want disaster to strike while you're uninsured) contact a home insurance agent to inquire about buying a home insurance policy. That policy should include not only the cost of your personal possessions but also the cost of rebuilding the house (inside and out) should it be totaled in a fire, windstorm, flood, etc. Don't give in to the temptation to take a look at the number the appraiser gave you and call it a day-those estimates include the cost of your land as well, which probably won't need rebuilding after a disaster but will set you up to pay way too much for your home insurance coverage.

Moving is a hassle. Moving your home insurance doesn't have to be. All you need to do is find a good home insurance agent that's going to be able to back you up and you've got all the resources you need to make picking up new insurance coverage for your new house as easy as 1-2-3. (Do re mi? You tell me!)
