How To Successfully Run A Home Business When You Have Kids At Home

By:

If you have kids, you're probably chuckling about that title. Run a business from home with the kids running around? Are you nuts?

If so, there are a lot of crazy people out there doing it—and doing it well. Many people make the decision to work from home for very simple reasons: they want to be there for the kids and they want to make money. You'll find you can be successful with your home business if you are flexible, have a good sense of humor, and stay focused (as much as possible).

Flexibility is probably the most important attribute you must have, because when you have kids at home you cannot really plan for anything. Sure, you can plan to have that conference call at 10 a.m. and be convinced your six-month-old will be down for their nap at that time. After all, every day for the past two months, they've been out like a light at 10 a.m. And then, you get your conference call and guess who's up and screaming?

It can be frustrating, yes. And maddening. And embarrassing. But slog through it and you should be fine.

You will learn, as a parent working from home, that you can get an amazing amount of work done in an incredibly short time. You become Super Worker. You can send out two times the number of e-mails in half the time when you know you only have a certain amount of time to get things done. You become efficient, condensed, and before you know it, you have more free time to spend with your kids, which is what you wanted in the first place.

You may find yourself getting up at 5 .m. just so you can get your work done. Or staying up until 2 a.m. Children, especially infants and toddlers, do not get that you are not available to them—and for a good reason. You should be available to them. Yes, that's easier said than done, which is why so many parents end up using day care—if only for a few hours a week. Another option is to hire a local teen-ager to be a "mother's helper."

Before you know it, your kids will be in school and you'll have hours and hours to work on your business in complete silence. It's hard to imagine that time, perhaps, but it will come. And you just might find yourself missing the days when you could sit your baby on your lap while you typed those important e-mails.
