How To Succeed At An Online Job

By:

So you've come to the end of your online job search and you've landed a position that's just right for you. Congratulations! But you're still not quite done yet. The last step of this process is making sure that you've set the conditions to allow you to succeed at your new job.

Many people think that working an online job will be a breeze. They can get out of bed when they want, then sit down at their computer and surf the Internet while they'll working on the day's assignments. Then they can go get takeout for lunch and take a nice long nap in the afternoon.

It's not that simple. You'll have just as much work to do at home as you would in a traditional office, and chances are good that you'll even have more. The only way you'll get through the workweek is with discipline and self-restraint. It's critical that you get up early and prepare for your online job as you would any other job. That means it's a good idea to get dressed for your online work because it will help put you in the right frame of mind to work for the day. You'll need to sit at your computer for as long as it takes you. Just make sure that you get up to walk around for five minutes every hour, and drink plenty of water. Nutritious snacks can also be helpful.

It's also very important that you're able to filter out any distractions. Put your computer in the quietest room in your house. There should be no TV or radio around. Have an email account and a cell phone that you use only for work. That way, your workday won't get interrupted by personal matters. Make sure that your kids and spouse know that you aren't to be interrupted when you are working unless there is an emergency.

You should also be polite but firm with your friends: let them know in no uncertain terms that just because you work at home does not mean you are free to babysit their kids or drive someone to and from soccer practice. If it helps, take your computer with you to a coffee shop, the public library, or any other quiet, low-key environment that helps you think (and that offers free WiFi).

Many people are overwhelmed by the amount of work their online jobs require of them. Stick with it, though, and try to maintain a positive outlook. After a while you will fall into a rhythm and job will seem much easier. You might even be asking for extra assignments to take on!

Until then, however, just keep reminding yourself that you will get better and faster at your job as time goes on. And when you're feeling especially discouraged, remind yourself that hey, at least you don't have to deal with the rush hour traffic anymore!
