How To Start An Autobiography

How To Start An Autobiography

By:

There are as many ways to record an autobiography as there are autobiographies to record. A myriad of resources exist on the web to help one get started recording. The trouble is you have to wade through some of the bad ones to get to the really good ones.

Try any of these items to start the process:

1. Record your story on tape or cd.

2. Look at your old photos.

3. Keep track of your day in a journal or diary.

4. Fill out autobiography questionnaires online.

5. Enlist your family and friends to help you remember and collect stories.

6. Fill out a pedigree chart or family tree.

Remember, It's Your Story

Sometimes people forget that they're writing their own story. Don't forget you're writing YOUR story. The way you write you reflect how you lived. Some writing workshops call this finding your voice. Above all, maintain your integrity. In other words, be honest. Describe your life and how you feel about your life honestly.

How Can You Get Started Immediately?

My absolute favorite way of autobiography starting is making lists.

Yeah. Lists: lists of stories, lists of family, lists of friends, lists of clubs, lists of cars, etc. Nothing could be easier than making lists. Don't underestimate the power of lists. You'll be amazed at how quickly the ideas start to flow. Have a pen and paper ready.

Your autobiography will come together as you in ways you couldn't imagine as you build and expand lists.

Sample Autobiographies And as far as an example of an autobiography...there are tons of these too. If you visit Wikipedia (a great online resource, by the way) you will find an over abundance of sample autobiographies for you to look at.

Take Your Time

Sometimes we think that we should be able to summarize our lives in quick half hour session. Once you know how to start an autobiography, you should allow your autobiography to develop over time. By slowing down, you'll accomplish a number of things, including:

You'll remember more stories.

You'll have time to collect stories from family and friends.

You'll learn a lot about yourself and the life you've lived.

You'll find your true voice.

Like I've said before, writing your story can be a very fulfilling endeavor. Reflect on it. Savor it. Let others contribute and rejoice in your life.

What are you waiting for?
