How To Start A Freelance Writing Online Business

By:

It may surprise you to learn that the best writers aren't always the best-paid writers.

Freelance writing online is often more about marketing than it is about providing a service. Your primary responsibility (to yourself) is to market your services and get more clients. After all, if you don't have a steady stream of new projects coming in, you won't be earning money. While having a background in sales could help, even a basic marketing foundation will help you find - and keep - writing clients.

Indeed, the ability to market your services will typically determine exactly much you get paid - not how well you write.

It may seem counterintuitive, but it's true.

In the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, author Robert Kiyosaki recounts a situation where he advised a journalist on how to make a living as a writer. Kiyosaki noted, much to the dismay of the young journalist, that the cover of his book touts him as a "Best Selling Author," not a "Best Writing Author."

Here's the point: your first objective as a freelancer should be to make enough money to pay the bills. The Pulitzer can wait.

The key to being a successful freelance writer online is positioning yourself as an expert. That is what your clients expect you to be. If they were the experts, they'd simply complete the project themselves. They don't because they lack the skill or knowledge to do the job justice, or are already busy enough.

That's where you come in.

So what's the dirty little secret of the freelance writing world? You can get paid a reasonable amount of money... even if what you produce isn't top quality. Some of what you write will be almost required to be at a lower quality than you might expect. Remember: most people have a 6th or 7th grade-level reading comprehension. If you can write as well as a 6th grader, you can earn money doing it.

As shocking as it may seem, one thing that works in your favor is that many clients value reliability over skill. Many clients will be tired of freelancers that flake out before a project is due. Reliable writers who consistently deliver on time are worth their weight in gold.

If you differentiate yourself by being professional and reliable, you'll get paid better and more frequently... even if you're not the best writer.

What's more, writing will improve your writing! The more you write, the better you'll get. Keep it up, and soon enough your confidence in your own writing ability will be sky high!
