How To Sell Photographs To Parents - They Love Pictures Of Their Children!

By:

There is a certain skill to taking children's pictures that can be difficult to learn, and it has little to do with actually using your camera. While some people find dealing with children simple, for others it can be even worse than a trip to the dentist. Whether you can get children to pose for you the way you want them to depends a lot on how well you naturally get along with them. My friends tell me I'm a big kid anyway, so I tend to adapt quite nicely. All you will need to do is get them to sit still for five minutes, but as anyone with children can tell you, this is not quite as easy as it sounds. Learning how to sell photographs in this market can be quite challenging.

I have found that child photography works well if you use backdrops which can be purchased relatively cheaply online. Basically you would need to bring to the shoot a backdrop and a stand, a tripod and your camera and flash. For this type of photography you need a stand-alone flash, and have the flash unit off to one side: - otherwise the backdrop can tend to reflect the light and become a white sheet. If you have your own portable studio lighting, obviously this will ultimately help produce a really professional job.

When trying to produce photographs that sell in the children market, it's helpful to bring props to the shoot, or ask the child's parents to bring some favourite toys along. These will add interest, and allow the viewer to get to know the subject more. As long as the child is sat down with the backdrop behind them you should be able to get a shots where the child appears to be in front of whatever is in the background. Ensure you cannot see the edge of the backdrop, and if possible get some pictures with the parents or grandparents in the shot as well.

You can either charge for your time plus prints, or for prints only, depending on where you are with your business. Charging for time at least guarantees you a minimum income, and you can consider how to sell photographs as part of the sitting fee. When the family returns a couple of weeks later to view the finished products, have 2 or 3 of your other best shots mounted and displayed, as you may be able to sell these also. The mother is likely to fall in love with them and want them too. Let her know you will store the images on disc for up to 12 months, and she can order extra prints at any time.
