How To Save Water Even If You're Already Using Rainwater Harvesting

It may be that you're already using rainwater harvesting techniques at home, and if you are, you'll be saving a significant amount of money due to extremely efficient use of your mains water supply. Saving mains water is good for the eco-system, and good for your pocket, as you will have found out. People already using rainwater harvesting will have already discovered that by using free recycled rainwater, that their water bills will have been reduced significantly.

Even if you're already using a system for recycling rainwater, you should still try to save water where you can. By saving water you reduce the possibility of your underground storage tank needing to top itself up with mains water in the summer months, and thus it saves you even more money. Here are just a few tips on how you can save water during the hot weather and at other times.

If you have a washing machine, only turn it on when you have a full load of washing to do. A standard cycle can use up to 100 litres of water. Even if you can only save one load a week, that's 5,200 litres of water saved over a whole year. Similarly, only use your dishwasher when you have a full load, as they use 20 litres of water each time you use it. Sprinklers and hosepipes use a lot of water, and if possible it's best to avoid them. A sprinkler can use up to 500 litres of water an hour. Use a bucket to wash the car rather than a hosepipe, as this saves a significant amount of water. You can always fill a bucket from a tap linked to your rainwater harvesting system. In fact, most rainwater harvesting systems should be linked to an outside tap to make gardening and car washing activities easier.

By using recycled rainwater you can be sure you are doing your bit towards saving mains water, and that means you are helping to conserve one of the planet's most valuable resources. You are also saving your community energy and money, as it takes a lot of power to run equipment to clean black and grey water in order to make it fit for human usage again. By not wasting mains water, we help to save that energy, and that has to be better for everyone. If you are already using a rainwater harvesting system then you are certainly doing your bit and we congratulate you.
