How To Save Money On Your Electricity Bill

By:

It's obvious that the simplest way to economize on your power bills is to use less. Almost everyone has already done the straightforward and relatively cheap things like changing to energy-efficient bulbs and switching lights off when not in use. There are other highly effective ways of saving power but they do have a price associated with them. This sadly puts people off because they do not see the longer term savings which can be made.

The following devices come with an up front price of between $30 - $50 but in many instances the products are long lived and they have a break even point of approximately 12 months. The following two products are easy to use and in the long run will save you money.

Electricity Monitors. Many people like to think that we don't leave electrical devices switched on when not in use but the truth is how can we know? If we don't know how can we switch them off? This is where an electricity monitor comes into its very own. These devices come in two parts. A transmitter that is clipped on your electricity meter which in turn sends information to your receiving unit in the home. The receiver provides a large LCD display that shows in real time how much power is being used in KW right now.

After a short period of time the normal background usage becomes known and any deviation from that figure indicates electrical devices that may have been left switched on by mistake. The typical culprit in my house is a teen aged daughter who leaves the water heater switched on. Now most water heaters use more that 3KW of power and leaving them switched on by mistake can be costly. I estimate my unit which cost $40 paid for itself in about a year and I'm now addicted to looking at the display whenever I go by!

Standby Power Savers. We assume than whenever a device is switched to standby it's using less electricity than when it's switched on. The fact is though standby mode often uses around 75% of normal usage! Manufacturers should really be dealing with this problem but until they actually do standby power savers are one answer.

These units are put between your power outlet and the device you intend to shut off. When you want to switch the TV off all you have to do is press a control button on a handheld control and mains power is turned off for that particular device. Switching the unit back on is identical simple press of a button. When you consider a lot of electrical devices are plugged into sockets which are difficult or impossible to reach these units are a God send. I love mine because when I go on holiday or go out I know everything is powered down.

Sometimes spending money to save money does actually make sense and these power saving units will quickly pay for themselves in a short time. If you think about how quickly electricity prices are rising these products make more sense than ever before.
