How To Relieve The Pain Of Osteoarthritis Inflammation

By:

As people age the body tends to break down and not work as well as during the younger years. Naturally aches and discomforts are part of the process of getting older. Different maladies become the bane of daily activities. As time progresses, the majority of individuals will experience osteoarthritis to one degree or another. Then, it will be nice to know how to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis inflammation.

In a normal healthy body, joints have cartilage between the bones to facilitate comfortable movement. As people grow older, the cushion between the bones thins. In some cases, the cartilage disappears altogether. Then, it becomes more difficult and painful to perform simple tasks once taken for granted. Sometimes, the stress on the joint becomes so severe, osteoarthritis inflammation occurs, making motion almost impossible.

At its worst, osteoarthritis inflammation and pain is debilitating and individuals find it impossible to function. Many are unable to work and cannot participate in the simple activities of everyday existence. So, what can be done?

To relieve the inflammation associated with osteoarthritis:

* Use over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain killers
* Prescription drugs
* Hot compresses
* Cold compress
* Rest
* Low impact exercises

Anti-inflammatory pain killers include ibuprofen, naproxen, Motrin and Advil. Although the medication can be purchased almost anywhere, it is still wise to be under the supervision of a doctor. Even over-the-counter medications can have adverse side effects if taken regularly for a prolonged period of time.

As the disease progresses, many patients will need something a little stronger to reduce the pain and swelling. Though there is no cure for the disease at present, a doctor has several prescription options to help relieve the osteoarthritis swelling. Rather than being stoic and trying to live with the pain, see a doctor.

Oftentimes, home remedies will also reduce the inflammation and ease the discomfort for a time. Hot and cold compresses on the affected joint can bring the swelling down, restore motion, and lessen the ache. Some patients prefer one temperature over the other, so it is simply a matter of personal preference and what feels best.

When a joint becomes too painful, sometimes there is no alternative but to rest and reduce the stress on the joint. Whether the soreness is in a finger, the back, a hip, or a knee, it is important to know when it is time to take the weight off and let the osteoarthritis inflammation go down naturally. If movement is necessary, aids may be necessary to help take the stress off of those bones.

Finally, although rest is recommended to reduce the osteoarthritis inflammation, sitting around motionless all the time tends to make joints stiff and virtually impossible to move. So, it is necessary to participate in low impact exercises, to maintain movement. A doctor will recommend what the patient should/should not do to live the best quality of life possible.

In short, there is nothing good about osteoarthritis inflammation. However, several options are available to reduce the swelling and relieve the pain. Patients can learn to live with the disease and find joy in living.
