How To Relieve Tension Headaches

By:

Tension headaches cause a band-like tightening pressure around the head. While the pain from this type of headache is not severe enough to put a halt to your day, it can make carrying out daily responsibilities unpleasant.

Stress is the primary culprit of tension headaches. The stress can come from things that happen in everyday life such as caring for children, being stuck in traffic, starting a new job, handling finances, and being late for an appointment. But everyone is different, so what triggers a tension headache in one person may not do it for another.

No matter what the cause of your headaches, you don't want them lingering for any longer than necessary. Here are some common ways to relieve tension headaches.

Use Aromatherapy to Relieve Tension Headaches

The scent of essential oils can relax you, and ease the discomfort of headaches caused by stress. Aromatherapy oils are most effective when they are used at the onset of tension headaches. Simply put a few drops of soothing essential oils in an aromatherapy burner, and massage a little on the temple of the head as soon as you feel a headache brewing.

Essential oil scents that are known for their ability to soothe include:

"basil
"sandalwood
"eucalyptus
"peppermint
"lavender

Swedish Massage to Ease Stress Headaches

The most common type of massage used for stress relief is a Swedish massage. This type of massage relieves stress, releases toxins in the body, and improves circulation. During a Swedish massage, the client lies on a table unclothed while a professional masseuse uses gentle pressure to rub tension away. Oil or lotion is used during the massage to help the massage therapist's hands glide across unclothed skin.

Use a Cool Compress for Tension Headaches

If you're trying to get rid of a tension headache, sitting in a dark, quiet room with a cool compress on your forehead will do the trick. You can make a cool compress by dipping a washcloth in ice water and wringing out the excess liquid. You can also purchase cool gel packs from a local pharmacy.

Pain Medications for Tension Headaches

Over the counter medications such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin, and naproxen are commonly used to relieve tension headache discomfort. Although these medications are available without a prescription, they can still be dangerous if they are taken improperly or mixed with other medications.

Over the counter meds can have such side effects as stomach bleeding, liver damage, and ulcers. So if you are taking drugs for other conditions, talk to a doctor before taking over the counter meds for pain relief.

Exercise to Relieve Headaches

Regular exercise provides an outlet for the daily stress that can lead to headaches. Aim for one-hour of moderate physical activity at least five days a week. Some great exercises to help you work up a sweat include walking, running, skating, aerobics, swimming, and biking.

With the help of pain medications, massage therapy, aromatherapy, exercise, and a cold compress, you can relieve the pain of a tension headache so you can move on with your day.
