How To Purchase A Cheap Acoustic Guitar

By:

When purchasing your first acoustic guitar there are several things you will want to consider. Obviously, the first thing on everyones mind is price. Many wonder if there is such thing as a cheap acoustic guitar. Although there are plenty of pricing acoustic guitars out there, there are also plenty of good sounding guitars out there in an affordable price range as well. Many great sounding acoustic guitars can be found in the lower price range of $200 - $400, and I have even seen some as low as $150 as well. If you are looking at used guitars or floor models, the pricing can get even lower.

You will also want to consider what type of guitar you are looking to purchase. This will greatly depend on what style of music you are looking to play. For instance, if you are looking to play a lot of amplified acoustic rock or folk shows, an acoustic electric guitar might be best for you. If you play more classical, jazz, or flamenco styles, a classical acoustic guitar is the right choice for you. All of these different types of acoustic guitars fall under wide price ranges for many different reasons.

You should always, without question, play the guitar before you decide to purchase it. Play several guitars, so that you have an idea of the differences between different models and types. First off, play the guitar sitting down and standing up. Ask yourself how it feels. Is it too heavy or is it just right? Does it feel too small or too big? If you are going to do the majority of your playing sitting down, does it sit right on your lap? Does it slip off your knee or does it sit just right? Since you will be the one playing the instrument the most, you will want to make sure you are comfortable with it.

While youre playing the guitar, ask yourself how it feels. Different types of acoustic guitars have different scales. Some have necks that are thicker, so if you have smaller hands, you may want a guitar with a thinner neck. Acoustic guitars can also have different gauge strings, for instance a classical acoustic guitar has nylon strings, which are typically easier on the fingers than a steel string acoustic guitar which has thicker strings. Ask yourself, which is more comfortable for you?

Lastly, of course the most important thing you will want to check for when shopping for cheap acoustic guitars is the way the guitar sounds. If it doesnt sound good to you, it wont sound good to your audience. Also since you will be the one playing your guitar the most, you will want to be playing a guitar you think sounds good. Contrary to popular belief, there are cheap acoustic guitars that sound just as good as expensive acoustic guitars. A lot of times the price can be affected by the brand that makes the guitar, and the country it was made in. Just because you are paying more for an acoustic guitar, does not always mean you are paying more for quality of sound. Always play your guitar before you purchase, and after playing several guitars, I know you will begin to catch a feel for what sounds good to you.
