How To Prevent Your Dogs From Drowning

By:

Dogs love outdoors activities such as going to the beach or having a walk by a lake and jumping or swimming in the water. Though most of the dogs can swim, a danger of drowning in the water is present. Just like humans, their swimming abilities vary greatly. Not all dogs can swim and though most dogs can, most of them can only swim in short distance and easily get tired in the water which leads to drowning. That is why dog owners must be keen enough in protecting their dogs when doing near water activities.

Doing some preventive and safety measures will provide your dog utmost protection from potential hazards. It is better to do some preventive measures rather than having a dog that has become a drowning victim. Here are some safety tips to prevent your dog from being a drowning victim:

1. Always keep an eye on your dog. Dogs loves to jump or swim on the water and there's a big tendency that may get drowned. Never let your dogs to play alone in the water or assume that they can swim. When dogs get tired in the water they might panic while on the water which then leads to drowning. Make sure to keep an eye on your dog or you're on their side while they are in the water.

You can't always watch your dog at home for the whole time. At homes with swimming pools, make sure to drown proof it and prevent your dogs from getting near the pool area. Install a fence and safety gates on your pool to prevent your dog from getting in the water unattended. If you are not using the pool and covered the pool with pool covers, make sure to watch your dog when it's in the pool area. It might step on the cover, deceived that the cover is a sturdy surface.

If you take your dog to the beach or just even take a walk near lakes, make sure to bring a life jacket for the dog. The dog life jacket will keep the dog safe while in the water by keeping the dog afloat. So even if the dog gets tired in the water, he can still stay safe with the use of a life jacket. The jacket must be of right fit for the size and length of the dog and must be of a good quality to provide buoyancy to the dog while in the water. The vest must also be fastened correctly on the dog.

Having a dog also comes with a big responsibility of taking good care and protecting it from hazards. It is better to invest on something for the safety rather that blaming yourself that you haven't protected your dog from hazards.
