How To Prevent Stretch Marks

By:

Many people would be very interested in knowing how to prevent stretch marks. They are caused when the middle layer of skin called the dermis is stretch beyond breaking point and starts to tear, leaving darker coloured scars and sometimes excess skin. These will fade over time but rarely disappear totally.

A cell called the fibroblast in the skin is what normally keeps the skin tight. It does this by monitoring a protein called collagen and how it interacts with the "extracellular matrix", which is basically outer part of a cell. All this means that the fibroblast is basically responsible for keeping the skin nice and smooth and tight.

When the skin is stretched to extremes however, the fibroblast is prevented from doing it's job properly by another hormone called glucocorticoid. Without the fibroblast there to monitor the skins tension the dermis can rip and this is where stretch marks come from.

You may take some comfort in know that you are certainly not alone when it comes to having stretch marks. Around 85% of women develop stretch marks during pregnancy, many teenagers experience them during fast growth, and even body builders bulking up their arms or legs can stretch the skin too far.

Once you have stretch marks it can be very difficult to remove them altogether. This means that preventing getting them in the first place is the ideal solution. Below are the different techniques that anyone can use to help prevent them.

Maintain a healthy diet. An obvious one from all health benefits points of view, but this really is key. A healthy diet really helps to maintain a healthy skin (not to mention a healthy everything else) and prevents you from increasing weight quick enough to get stretch marks. If you are planning on losing weight do it in small steps (about 2lbs a week) to avoid having excess skin.

Drink water. Drinking a lot of water also has health benefits, not least for keeping the skin hydrated.

Vitamins. Hopefully you'll cover this one with a balanced diet, but you must ensure that you take a rich intake of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and silica. All these are important to maintaining a healthy skin.
