How To Prevent Migraine Triggers

By:

There is no instant remedy or cure for migraines, however there a plenty of preventative measures that can be taken to at least alleviate the possibility of a migraine by knowing what triggers an attack. These measures can be something so simple like being aware of what you eat and drink, what exercise you do, (if any), do you have a regular sleep pattern. This list isnt endless and may not be relevant to all sufferers, but being aware of what could trigger a migraine is vitally important. .

Well-Balanced and Healthy Diet

Following a well-balanced and healthy diet is certainly one of those steps that can help towards alleviating migraine triggers, not only by helping to prevent a migraine, but also for your overall health.

Always eat fresh produce such as meat, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables, steer clear of foods that contain preservatives and additives such as pre-packaged and processed foods. Foods that contain the natural substance of tyramine should also be avoided. This natural substance is commonly found in mature/aged cheeses, citrus fruit and bananas, caffeine (coffee, tea, cola and numerous energy drinks).

This may not be a popular item to eliminate from the diets of certain people, but unfortunately alcohol is definitely one to avoid especially red wine, beer and whisky.

Foods that contain MSG (monosodium glutamate), normally found in Chinese food pizza, chips and many pre-packaged foods.

By being more conscious of what foods may be contributing to an attack, you can then take the necessary steps to avoid any of those food triggers that cause the migraines.

Eat regularly

Resist the temptation to fast or skip meals, firstly it wont help your diet and secondly it will most certainly trigger a migraine.

Exercise

There is some confusion as to whether exercise is a migraine trigger or not. In general, doctors advise that regular exercise is good for general health in the same way a healthy diet is. Like every other preventative action it does depend on the individual. What may work for one sufferer, may not work for another.

Sleeping patterns

Irregular sleeping patterns/habits can trigger migraines, but also being fatigued or overly tired will have the same outcome, it is therefore best advised to develop a normal sleeping habit.

Emotional Stress

This is a common migraine trigger which includes amongst others anxiety, worry, fatigue, anger and believe it or not excitement and anticipation! To prevent these becoming triggers, try to relax and keep away from those stressful situations that may arise.

Environment

The environment around us can have many migraine triggers which perhaps not all sufferers are particularly aware of.

Light

Computers and TV screens
Tube/fluorescent lights
Strobe lights
Bright sunlight/glare

Sound

Loud noise

Smell

Strong odours

Weather

Changes in temperature and humidity

Travel

Altitude changes

There are numerous ways that can help to prevent and reduce the triggers that cause migraine attacks, but remember everybody is different and what may trigger a migraine for one person may not trigger a migraine for another. Keep a record of what triggers your migraine and make an effort to remove or eliminate them from your daily life..
