How To Prepare For A Long Distance Move

By:

You are moving a long distance, probably across the country. You can't do this by carloads with friends help. Long distance movers are hired and the time is approaching for the big day. How do you prepare? How do you sort through years of accumulated possessions to make the move as pain free and organized as possible?

The first step is to start going through your stuff. You don't want the long distance movers to simply box up old receipts, broken cups and useless papers. You want your house to have been gone through fairly extensively before the movers ever show up. You are starting a new life in a new place; don't bring the old clutter with you. Start with three categories; keep, give away and sell if you have time. A garage sell is a perfect way to make a little money while decluttering your house.

Hopefully you have a little time for this project, as it is not going to be fast or easy. Depending on how long you have lived at your present address, how many are in your family and what kind of a pack rat you are, this project could take months. Most people don't have months before a move. If this is the case, you're going to have to work fast. Start with the kitchen. The rule of thumb is, if you haven't used it in the past 12 months get rid of it. The exception to this of course, is grandmother's fine china. Remember there are people who are struggling and could use your extras. Moving is a great time for uncluttering your life and sharing with others.

After the kitchen, start sorting the garage. The garage can be overwhelming. Remember whereever you are moving, they will have a home improvement store, you don't have to pack every bolt, nut and hinge you ever disregarded. Seriously consider the stuff and how much of it is really used and how much could be given away or sold.

When the kitchen and garage is finished, you will be exhausted but relieved. The rest is much easier (unless you have an attic). Remember it is the memory and not the stuff that resonates with you. Keep the memories, take pictures if you want, but get rid of the clutter. A long distance move is stressful, it is exciting and adventurous, don't add to the stress by taking a truckload of clutter with you. Long distance movers know how to get your stuff from California to New York; you make sure they don't bring the broken flower pot.
