How To Prepare For A Hurricane

Hurricanes are usually accompanied by strong rains and winds which can change directions quickly. The fact that the hurricane season is coming up makes it important to know the steps to prepare. Without proper preparation you can lose your life, home, be out of water and experience other calamities. Without panic, it's good to think out what is needed.

Meet with the family and discuss the risks involved. A few of the areas to think out include power outages, personal injuries, evacuation,water supply, electricity, food, dealing with high winds. Post emergency phone numbers and prepare your first aid kits. Stock up on food supply. Know what schools are open in case you need to evacuate.

We don't know how long the hurricane will last so it is advisable to stock up on essentials. It is better to but foods that are ready to eat like canned foods but still have a high nutrition value. Also consider the elderly or infants, they might need special foods or medications. If a loved one is on dialysis think out ways to deal with this situation. Having a generator can be very helpful for many situations including cooking and high heat temperatures.

Store food in a cool dry place. Remember drinking water. Is your home secured? Do you have hurricane shutters? Is anything loose outdoors that can fly around and cause damage to a person or property? Repair loose boards, doors and tighten screws. Do you know the condition of your roof? Also check your appliances, check and be sure that you have fresh new batteries for your flashlights, radios and other battery operated things. If you don't have a radio, it's good to get one as you may not be able to watch tv or use your cell phone.

Check and secure furniture so that it will not be movable by sinds. Board up windows or tape them to avoid shattering. There are no guarantees but being prepared is the best way to start. Keep in mind that you should be level headed and calm. Always have a backup plan. There are often shelters that open up that are available should you be unable to remain in your home.
