How To Prepare For A Catastrophe

By:

It is indeed terrifying to be struck by catastrophe but when such a situation occurs we need a plan for immediate evacuation, provisions, communication, and transport to save the family. The children must know what to do in such situations or if they are too small they have to be reached. However, an efficient plan can be developed by having the necessary resources available all the time. The correct items have to be packed in your emergency kits. Hence it is important to equip oneself with all the knowledge regarding relief during a crisis.

Learn about the particular risk that your area is more prone to and prepare accordingly. Some areas are prone to a particular form of catastrophe, such as hurricanes often occur in Louisiana or earthquakes are more likely to occur in California. Other disasters such as floods, tornadoes, chemical spills or a radiation leakage are more probable in specific areas. Identify these and make the preparation keeping the particular disaster in mind.

Take care that all your family members can easily be contacted and for this purpose each must have a prepaid cell phone for communication. One can also dial 9-1-1 in case of dire need. Unfortunately, this is not very reliable as towers may be down at times hence a prepaid phone card is also essential to enable calls from any phone booth. Dont get tired of making calls as sometimes in cases of crisis all communication lines might be down. It might take some time to get in touch. Text messages can also be sent to your family members and so all family members must also learn how to do this.

It is also a good idea to name one contact member who is out of your city as a coordinator in times of a catastrophe. Intimate all your family members about this person along with his telephone number and contact details so that all can get in touch with him.

You can also make use of radios by having a walkie-talkie installed in your vehicle as well as those of the other family members. Communication through this is fairly easy and quick. Do keep extra batteries with you for an emergency.
