How To Overcome Phobias

By:

Phobias can be amongst some of the most debilitating and restrictive anxiety disorders around. There is literally an A-Z list of the various phobias. Some phobias are very specific, for example, spider phobias. Arachnophobia, usually develops through one specific experience or series of experiences with a spider.

However other specific phobias, such as Emetaphobia, really commence with an obvious sensitising experience of the sufferer. This creates another problem. Not knowing where the problem came from. This uncertainty can exacerbate the phobia dramatically, because the mind can develop an overactive imagination, and even begin to worry about warring.

And there are so many different types of therapies around to supposedly be able to assist people to cure phobias. But phobias are not diseases, so the word "cure" probably is not the best description around. Phobias alone, and thus, they can be unlearned.

When somebody has a specific phobia with a very specific and known cause, it can be remarkably simple to assist a person through counselling and hypnotherapy to retrain their mind to respond differently and more appropriately to the phobic stimuli. There are many different ways to achieve this aim. Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) offers one such measurably effective and sometimes almost instantaneous method for literally racing the intense phobic response.

However sometimes in NLP is not enough. This is especially so when the cause of the phobia remains a mystery to the sufferer. Simply working with the sufferer's thoughts and behaviours are rarely adequate for affecting long-term measurable change. Unfortunately, so-called quick fix, short-term approach's alluding to and sometimes even promising magical fixes, bound.

What does work, however, is more likely going to be a well integrated approach that does take into account person's personal history, attachment style, strengths and resources. The aim can be achieved in a variety of different ways.

For example, self hypnosis recordings, counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, mindfulness therapy, and Buddhist psychotherapy can actually all be well integrated and applied to the express benefit of the client, with the client, in collaboration. All combined, the person is likely to not only reduce or eliminate their phobias once and for all, he or she is highly likely to make those changes stick.

Phobias are really exaggerated fears. The intention behind phobias always appears positive when one bothers to dig deep enough. For example self protection and self preservation are very important positive intentions. Mindfulness therapy can assist people to reduce harmful habits of self-criticism or excessive worry which exacerbate phobias and create new problems.
