How To Overcome Anxiety - 7 Ways To Overcome Anxiety For Parents!

By:

How to overcome anxiety suddenly becomes a top priority in your life, if you have a teenager. Each day may bring rising stress levels, as their moods change, they experiment with different behaviour and you become increasingly concerned about them.

For parents to retain their sanity and balance during this turbulent period, they need to know how to overcome anxiety, cultivate mental calm and inner strength.

These are the elements I have discovered, that keep me balanced living with my 14-year old, and I hope they will be useful for you too.

1. What you think about, you magnify.

When something happens that shakes your trust in your teenager, remind yourself that their behaviour is about their choices and has really nothing to do with you.

They are still learning how to be in the world and you are upset because you expected them to behave differently. By communicating to your teenager that, they just made a mistake and are still a trustworthy person, you will help restore their faith in themselves, and keep yourself empowered. Keep your focus on what you want to encourage in them.

2. Faith that the universe is a benevolent place.

Cultivating a religious or spiritual faith and belief that everything that happens is for your highest good in some way, can help put things in a more positive light. This is especially necessary when you are going through stressful times.

3. Remind yourself that nothing goes on forever.

This can provide you with the necessary strength to get through it. Sometimes we react to situations as if our lives depended on them, instead of putting them into perspective.

4. Supportive friends.

Having positive people you can discuss things with,is a godsend! Your teenager's behaviour probably pales into insignificance considering other peoples' experiences!

5. Drop the high standards and expectations.

Learning how to overcome anxiety involves acceptance of your teenager rather than trying to make them into who you want them to be! More anxiety and bad feelings will be created, if you try to force them to be what they are not.

6. Create a tranquil home environment.

Your home environment needs to be a place where you feel calm and relaxed. Get rid of anything that makes you feel stressed (apart from your teenager!!!). Play soothing music, light some candles and essential oils, and have your own space you can retreat to, where you can just lock the door and have some alone time!

7. Delete anxious thoughts that come into your mind.

Worrying about your teenager can become an addiction you do not need! To learn how to overcome anxiety, you may need to change how you represent things to yourself. When worrisome thoughts or pictures come into your head, just imagine you are erasing them and putting them into the bin.

Parenting teenagers need not be a roller-coaster of anxiety if you can look after your own well-being first.
