How To Operate A Laptop Without A Battery

By:

Plug the circular end of the AC cord into your laptop. The plug-in on the computer should be somewhere on the side or behind and below the screen. Plug the three-prong end of the AC cord into the wall.

Locate the AC power cord. Since you do not have a battery, you will need an AC power cord to operate the laptop.
Most laptops today are equipped with Lithium Ion batteries, but older models may run off a Nickel Metal Hydride or Nickel Cadmium battery. It's essential that you learn your model's specifications so you can follow the correct usage practices. This is the only way you'll be able to achieve maximum battery power.

Charging your battery for the first time is just the beginning. You must give your laptop battery the utmost attention if you want to get the best out of it.
Never let your battery stay connected to a power source once it's fully charged. This leaves the battery in a constant state of charging up, ultimately reducing its life cycle. Once your battery is charged, unplug your laptop's AC adapter, or remove the battery.
When you're storing a battery, expect it to naturally discharge itself about 10 to 15 percent over a four-month period. It's best to fully charge your battery before storage. When you are storing your battery, you should plug it into your laptop every month or so and let it discharge and charge back up a little. Make sure you fully discharge and charge your battery every three or four months
The amount of time it takes for your battery to fully charge depends on many factors, like your battery type and operating system. Many newer laptops will charge in 15 to 20 minutes, while others can take a few hours.

Turn on the laptop and check the status of the battery. Test the length of time that the laptop battery charge is held by unplugging the laptop from the power source and leaving the computer on but idle. Compare this time with the time that Compaq promises a new battery will last. If considerably shorter, continue following the next two steps to enhance the battery life of your Compaq laptop.

Dim the brightness of the Compaq's screen as much as possible to extend your laptop battery charge. This is the second major cause of rapid power usage. Also, unplug any USB devices such as external hard drives, as these derive their power from the computer itself and will quickly drain your laptop's battery charge.

If you keep your battery fully charged and never use it, this will actually decrease its life span, according to Laptop Battery. Unplug your laptop so the battery is in use at least once a month, but if you have a Li-ion (lithium-ion) battery (as do most laptops made after 2000) do not ever let it completely discharge.

Defragging your hard drive makes it more efficient, draining your battery less. You should also clean the battery's metal contacts every two to three months and clean out the laptop's air vents to keep the machine cool. Check your power settings and make sure they're optimized for power saving when the battery is in use.
