How To Open A Up Laptop Adapter

By:

Laptop power adapters can cost upward of $100 to replace, so you want to make sure you exhaust all possible repair options before buying a new one. To find out what's wrong with your adapter, you may need to open it, but most laptop manufacturers do not produce adapters with intuitive opening mechanisms. Adapters rarely feature screws or external clasps. However, while opening a laptop adapter is not intuitive, it is possible.
Tighten the hand-held vice grip little by little on the upper casing just above the crease separating it from the bottom until a very firm seal is made. Be careful not to crack the casing. Tighten until the shape of the plastic casing is slightly askew. Listen closely to the casing because this may cause the welding to bend and/or break slightly. Repeat the putty knife process if such a break can be made.
Set up a blow drier on it's highest heat setting and point it at one point of the casing. Let it heat for up to an hour, and repeat Step 2. Try the blow dryer at several different points on the casing, because the high heat may cause the welding to become loose or malleable.
Attempt to simply pull the casing of the AC/DC power adapter apart. (If the adapter is old, it may have been worn enough for this to be effective.) Try a putty knife to get the casing apart by sliding the edge of the knife into the crevice of the top and bottom casing shells and prying the knife up gently.
Turn your laptop adapter on its side and slide the tip of a knife into the adapter's seam, as recommended by PR Log. Laptop adapters are never a solid piece of plastic, there is always a seam somewhere in the adapter, even if it is hard to spot. If you don't notice a seam, peel back any stickers on the adapter to find the seam located beneath.
Wait five minutes before proceeding. Even after the adapter has been unplugged, it can retain a faint electrical charge. Though the adapter connects to the laptop battery, the adapter itself is not a battery capable of lengthy charge retention. The charge will dissipate in just a few minutes and allow safe handling.
Turn the adapter to the opposite side once your notice the adapter casing separating. If you apply all the force exclusively on one side of the adapter, you risk damaging the adapter as it opens. Wiggle the knife and tap it with the hammer again if necessary.
Flip the adapter again and repeat the knife wiggling motion until the casing pops open. The pressurized clasps may take several minutes of pressure from the knife and hammer before they fully release.
Move the knife from the sides to the middle. It takes a little wiggling to get it to the middle. Check that the seal on the seam is broken around the entire adapter. Pop off the bottom of the adapter to open it.
Unplug the laptop. The plug supplies power to the adapter. When opening the adapter, check that the computer is not plugged in to prevent injuries.
