Each and every one of us has different shapes and it is important to understand that the hairstyle is maybe wrong for a particular shape. The ultimate judges of face shape are the professional hair designers but if you want to do it yourself try following the instructions.
There are lots of ways in measuring and determining your face shape. The procedures include: outlining of the face with a lipstick (draping it with a towel) in the mirror and let others guess the shape; measuring your face with tape measure or ruler; lastly, going to the nearest hair salon with state of the art software for accuracy and convenience.
To figure out the shape of your face, you need a tape measure or ruler, a pen and a piece of paper to write down your measurements. You are now ready for the following the steps:
- First, choose a place with good lighting like the bathroom. Stand in front of the mirror and start the measurements.
- Measure your face across the top of your cheekbones. The starting point is the outer corner of your eye; lay the tape measure in a straight line at the bridge of your nose and past the corner of the other eye (end point). Write down the measurement on a piece of paper.
- Next, measure your jaw line; measure across the widest part of your jaw. Write down the measurement.
- Measure your forehead. Place the end of the tape measure at the widest point of one side of the forehead, run across your head to the point of the opposite side of the forehead. Generally, the widest point is somewhere about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline. Write down the measurement.
- Lastly, measure the length of your face; starting from the middle of your hairline down to your face, over your nose, to the tip of your chin.
Guidelines in determining your face shape:
Oval Face length equal to one and a half times width. An oval face may change according to weight gain or loss and age.
Round Face - your face will be as wide as it is long. This may vary a little where your face is not quite as wide as it is long, but within 1/4 to 1/2 inches.
Oblong - longer than it is wide.
Heart - narrow at jaw line, wide at forehead and cheekbones.
Square - your forehead, jaw line and cheekbones are almost equal in width.
Diamond - wide cheeks, narrow forehead and jaw line; may have a pointed chin.
In sorting out your face shape, it is necessary to pull your hair back tight with a structure-revealing ponytail. Look at the outline of your face, the shape and size of the forehead and compare it to your cheek and chin to determine the shape.
