How To Make Your Resume Stand Out

By:

When applying for a job in today's very competitive job market, a job seeker must do everything they can to stand out from the pack. Here are three things to be mindful of to keep you at the top of the list of candidates.

1.Follow all directions. Our company has been doing some recruiting for interns. As part of the process, the job advertisement includes 3 steps to apply. One of the steps requires applicants to read an article, and then write a 140 character summary of the article.

Through this menial task, it has become apparent that jobseekers today are not being very conscientious. Only one out of 10 candidates did the task correctly. The way to stand out from other job seekers may be simple. Be careful to follow directions accurately.

2.Your desire for the position is not unique. Over and over employers are hearing JUST HOW MUCH a candidate wants or needs the job. NEWS FLASH - Every candidate who is applying really needs and wants the job. This does not make you unique. Instead, tell us specifically why you are drawn to the company, or tell us why the company should really want you!

3.Do not focus on what the company can do for you. Instead, you need to focus on what you can do for the company. Going on and on in a cover letter about how the company can give you opportunities to learn new skills or manage others will not appeal to a recruiter. We already know what our company can do for you. You need to make an appeal for the insurmountable benefits that you will bring to our company.

With these three things in mind, you should be on your way to the top of the stack of resumes for an open position. Just remember to follow directions, realize that there are others who want the job as badly as you, and write from an empathetic, not egocentric standpoint.

If you talk only about how the company can help you, how badly you want the position, and then don't follow directions, the individual screening the applications will assume you are not going to be a star employee.

Be careful and thoughtful in your application process. Employers around the country will be impressed.
