How To Make Your Home Garage Safer

By:

My husband is of the opinion that every manly-man needs to have a garage wherein he can work. He finds it incredibly masculine to build things, manage power tools, and just generally tinker with things.

Well, we unfortunately don't have a garage just yet, but once we live in a home with a garage, we will most like have an expanding family, too, so I want to make sure that it is a safe place for any member of the family to venture.

Too many families have disorderly and even hazardous garages. They are well aware of this, but they don't know just how to make the space safer--or worse: they don't think it's necessary because they no longer have little ones.

I hope you don't fit into the latter category. Safety in and around the home is vital. Household accidents can happen to anyone, regardless of age. So allow me to share a few tips to lessen the hazards in and around the garage.

First of all, you need to consider your garage door. Most doors include the safety feature which detects people or objects in the door's path and will immediately revert to its open position. If yours does not, it is time to install a new door.

Next, get organized. Take a weekend or as much time as is needed to sort through the junk. Have a garage sale. Then, with the extra space, build shelves and/or cupboards to store the items that need to remain in the workspace.

Get all chemicals--including paint--and sharp objects definitively out of reach of babies and young children. If you put these items up on shelves, make sure the shelves are deep enough so that the hazards will not be easily knocked over. It may be better to put them in locked cabinets inside the garage.
Garages are subject to the effects of whatever weather is raging outside, so this means the floor will often get wet and possibly slippery. It is best to install non slip stair treads on any steps leading up to the door leading inside the house. This is an excellent safety precaution to keep others from slipping because snow or rainwater has been brought in from outside.

If you actually park your car(s) inside the garage, make sure that there is a wide berth between your work area and the storage area and the cars. After all, they need to be kept safe from scratches and dents!

Too many people allow their garages to become carelessly cluttered and busy. If you take the time to make your garage a safer area, your family members and your cars are less likely to endure accidents both big and small!
