How To Make Your Car Cost Less To Run

If you want to save money, one of the first things you should look at is your car. Cars can cost quite a lot of money to run if you arent looking after them properly, but it isnt just whats under the bonnet that you need to keep a close eye on. There are a number of things that you can do without the help of a mechanic to make your car more cost-effective.

To ensure that you are getting the most out of your fuel, you should keep your tyres fully inflated at all times. The lower your cars tyre pressure is, the more likely you are to experience drag, which will in turn use up more of your fuel. Check your tyres at least once a month you can usually inflate them for free at some petrol stations.

If you have a roof rack you should take it off and store it in your garage, as this will only be adding wind resistance which can also cause drag. If you only need to use your roof rack when needed.

If your car is quite cluttered, getting rid of some of the items could help. If you have any unnecessary items in your boot of lying about your car, clear everything away. Though you may not think this would make much of an improvement, it will actually make accelerating faster.

Running your cars air conditioning when you dont actually need to will eat up a huge percentage of your fuel. If no one in the car is feeling the benefit of having the air conditioning on, turn it off.

Try not to rev your engine too much, as this will be releasing more fuel than is actually needed. You should try to stay below 3,000 revs whenever possible, and you should see that this doesnt actually affect your top speed.

You should be driving in the correct gear anyway, but if you arent you will be overworking the engine unnecessarily. If you notice that you do this, start switching to the correct gear rather than labouring your car.

All of this should help to cut your fuel costs a substantial amount, but if you are still finding it difficult to afford your trips to the petrol station, it may to time to change to a new, more fuel-efficient car. You can get used cars on finance to help spread the cost, so you wont have to part with a large amount of money all in one go.
