How To Make Wiser Financial Decisions During The Recession

During these terrible economic times we really should make serious modifications to the benevolent life-styles that we are so accustomed to. The days when we were free to spend like there was no tomorrow are in the past. At this moment money is tight; making a couple of modifications to our life-style can make a huge difference. Here are a few tips on how we can stop being uneconomical and start to save our money.

1. Be enlightened about your cable television package. Skip the HBO, HDTV and movie on demand purchases and stick to the basic package. The little extras add up! Is it really necessary for you to have all those channels?

2. I really recommend that you do not sign up for store credit cards no matter how luring the offer may be. Store credit cards tend to have all out high interest rates, and at the end of the month if you don't pay off the money that you owe in full, you are going to end up losing much more money than you supposedly saved when you first made the purchase, just from the high monthly interest charges.

3. I wouldn't advice you to go grocery shopping with a hungry stomach, make sure you eat a good meal or at least have a snack and a large glass of water before going out. That way you will not be tempted to buy unnecessary snacks, which will help you cut down on impulse purchasing. It might be a good idea to carry an energy bar with you at all times, just incase you get hungry and need that quick energy boost while your out shopping.

4. Clean out your closet and your garage. You'll be taken back at how much stuff you'll find that you don't even use anymore. You can simply turn all that stuff into some extra cash by having a garage sell or selling it on eBay.

5. Utilize coupon codes when shopping online. There're a great abundance of coupons online that you can take advantage of. You will be shocked at how many promotional offers you can get online that are not offered in store. Shopping online also gives you the flexibility to compare prices at the click of the mouse.

6. Swap babysitting nights with friends, or family. Child care is so pricey, a lot of parents will be more than grateful to do this with you. At the end of the day you get to save on childcare expenses and you at least get to have someone whom you know and trust to take good care of your children.

7. Contact your credit card companies and ask them if it is possible to lower your interest rates, they just might do so if you were a good client.

8. Always try to pay more than the minimum credit card payment each month, and remember it's advisable to pay off your high interest rate credit cards before the low interest rate cards.

9. Why not purchase your clothing, appliances, and furniture from outlet stores and thrift stores. You can get good quality clothes and even name-brand clothes at low prices. These stores regularly offer a lot of good sales and discounts.

10. Only dine out at eating places on special occasions such as Birthdays, Anniversaries, Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Valentines Day. Dinning out most of the time is too pricey; you save so much more by cooking your own meals.
