How To Make Sure Your Website Design Isn't Gender Biased

By:

It has been observed through various researches and surveys that both the genders prefer their own gender designed websites, when surfing. Like females tend to like websites designed by females and males like websites designed by males. However, the statistics show that around 80% of the websites are designed by males, with only 20% being designed by females. The statistics are for the websites the world over.

This raises a concern that what about all the female website designers currently undergoing training, arent they able to compete or is it that their importance in website designing isnt duely considered. What about the websites which require a female targeted audience, isnt the fact that they already fail to generate the expected results enough to consider the importance of female designers in this industry? What about the websites with a target audience belonging to both the genders? How can we create an unbiased website design is the concern world over.

After some surveys and observations, it is proposed that following ingredients need to be kept in mind before designing your websites in order for them to be unbiased.
In order to maximize your target audience you need to focus on both the genders. And work on the design aesthetics used and the resulting appeal these websites will have on their target markets.

Visuals
It is observed that males tend to favor straight lines, whereas females favor round forms so visuals should be a mix of both straight and round forms.

Colors
Males tend to go for fewer colors compared to females, so a perfect blend and a moderate number of colors should be used.

Language
Males prefer formal and knowledge based websites compared to females, so the website language should be able to blend both the tones.

It is further proposed that, you should hire an equal number of male and female designers in your team and assign a single website to a team of both male and female designers and then blend their proposed ideas such that the website reflects both the minds. Website designing which is free from any gender biasness is especially useful in sites targeting both the genders.
