How To Make An Adult Tutu Quickly

By:

The word for your product is TULLE! Tulle is a lightweight, very fine netting that is so inexpensive you won't believe it. You can find it in craft stores but please look at Super Centers and Fabric stores as they buy their supply in bulk and with this you'll find incredibly inexpensive prices per yard. It comes in every color of the rainbow. It can be pastel or vibrant. It's often fun to layer matching colors but sandwiching them with one featuring glitter so you can sparkle with your costume or outfit.

After you've picked your main color, go over to the ribbon section. Match this and purchase a good wide ribbon to sew over the elastic. If the ribbon is not wide enough to act as a casing, then sew it directly to the elastic. Whether you are making a genuine ballet style Tutu, or a miniature to fit around your face as a Lion's mane, choose a wide elastic so it doesn't flip or curl. Wide starts at one inch and can go up to 5 or 6. Waist elastic is generally two, two and a half or three inches wide. I wouldn't use anything less than one inch for face framing.

You need the sturdy base. You can really cut loose and experiment with what type of Tutu you wish. The originals use starched Tulle, and are cut in round circles with an opening in the middle. The circles gradually get smaller so they will stick straight out from the waist. If your waist is 30 inches, you'll want to cut the circle at 42 or 44, so you can gather it down to 32 to 34 so you can stretch the elastic waistband to slip it over your head or step into it. The outer circumference ranging from 1 foot to 3 ft can get as large as 60 inches because again, you are gathering it and want it very full. You'll sew the layers together, then attach them on the inside of your elastic, sewing your matching ribbon over that to cover the stitches. That's the basic tutu. You can also cut individual Petal shapes for the more modern Tutu. End it with many shorter ones flowing down from the waist.

This will also give you an interesting hemline. Nothing says all Tutu's have to be perfectly symmetrical. You can always have them short on one side and dripping down across the body to a lengthier skirt. Don't forget your matching head bands or bracelets.
