How To Maintain Car Tires

By:

Many people are not aware that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 10,000 injuries and 400 deaths happen across the United States as a result of the tires failing or blowing out.

Even though lack of proper tire care is the primary factor in such an elevated number of accidents, a large group of drivers will simply not take the time to perform the proper maintainance on their own tires which can cause even further risk of danger.

Just as the feet are the worst cared for part of the body, so are the tires on a car. Most people barely give them a moment's notice unless they there is some evidence of damage. By neglecting to maintain your car's tires, you are putting yourself at risk for a grave accident.

If you are driving at a rate of approximately forty to sixty miles per hour when your tires fail, the likelihood of you experiencing bodily injury is very high. If you do what is necessary to properly care for your tires, you will be doing much to minimize the risk of accidents for all those riding inside your vehicle. Another advantage to maintaining your tires is that it will increase the overall performance of your automobile.

There are two major factors that cause failure or blowouts in tires. The first is that the tires are either inflated too much or too little. Either one of these conditions will cause high levels of stress and heat.

Another factor is seasonal and temperature changes which greatly impact a tire's stability. During the spring and summer seasons when there are usually higher temperatures, the amount of air released from the tires is increased. During other seasons of the year, the typical rate of pressure loss is approximately one to two pounds but during the summers months, this amount goes up dramatically.

A good rule of thumb to follow is to measure the amount of air in your tires after each trip to the gas station for a fill up. You should also do a pressure check before a long trip and every thirty days. If you are uncomfortable with the thought of dirtying your hands, most mechanic shops can do it for you for a small fee.

In the event that your tires do blow out, do not panic, and do not slam on the brakes. This is most people's first instinct which will make the car swerve to the side and expose you to even more risk. Instead, gentley apply the brakes in order to bring the car under enough control to get it off the road where the tire can then be replaced.

By properly maintaining your car tires and doing inspections on a regular basis, you will be doing much to contribute to both you and your family's safety and security.
