How To Lose Your Data

By:

Computers are amazing machines. Not only do they allow us to play card games, play music and watch movies, but they are filing cabinets for our important documents, digital photos and financial information. They hold massive amounts of important data. Much of this data would be hard to replace or re-create if lost. Some of it might be irreplaceable. Take the following steps if you want to:

    Cause damage to your computer

Shorten the life of your machine

    Ruin your hard drive

Lose all of your important data

Pay a data recovery company to recover your lost files and data

      Keep That Computer Dirty

If you want to cause damage to your desktop and shorten its life, never clean the interior. Do not shut off the power, remove the power cord, disconnect all of the peripherals and carefully set the computer case on the table. Then, do not use a can of compressed air, designed for electronics, and carefully blow the dust and debris from the heat sinks on the motherboard. Make sure not to remove the built-up dirt and dust on the cooling fans. These are used to dissipate heat from the electronic components. Heat buildup will reduce the efficiency of the processor, hard drive and other components, hopefully causing failure. Allowing dust and dirt to accumulate will cause the interior components to build up enough heat to fry electronics, if not fish.

While we are on the subject of heat, make sure that you leave your laptop sealed up in your car on hot summer days. Place it in the back window to ensure that the glass will intensify the rays of the sun like a magnifying glass.

Treat Your Laptop Like a Notebook

That is to say, treat it like a three-ring binder. Be sure to toss it around, dropping it soundly on the table, car seat or bench on the bus. This may allow the delicate read and write heads on the hard drive to jostle around, potentially scratching the drive platters and possibly become damaged themselves. Do this whenever you can to ensure a trip to the data recovery expert.

      Neglect Basic Computer Data Maintenance

Never, under any circumstance, backup your data. Doing so will only allow easy data recovery and keep you from spending money on a hard disk data recovery service. Do not update your antivirus scanner. Do not even install one if you can help it. It will only safeguard your computer and leave your data protected. Antivirus software greatly reduces the opportunity for data loss. Additionally, defragmenting your disk will decrease seek times, increasing efficiency. Keeping it fragmented will cause the drive to work harder and decrease its life by increasing wear and tear.

Sadly, proper maintenance and handling will increase the life of your computer or laptop and help keep your data safe. But there is hope. To paraphrase a popular commercial: Its your data; lose it when you want to!
