How To Lose Weight At Home

By:

Everyone"s always talking about how they want to lose weight. New, trendy diets or an expensive piece of exercise equipment are always being pushed to those who want to lose weight and improve their health. For effective weight loss, many people think that they have to sign up for a gym membership or join a pricey weight watching program. However, with just a little effort, you can lose weight at home, without ever stepping foot in a gym or weight loss center. Here are some weight loss tips you can follow:

Eating smart

Most fad diets are unhealthy and may actually damage your overall health instead of improving it. These diets are mostly endorsed by people with no real background in health or nutrition. Instead, concentrate on cutting out foods filled with empty calories: snacks and junk that are filled with simple sugars and saturated fat, but have little vitamin, mineral, or fiber content. Potato chips, beer (even the "light" kind), soda, and candy bars fall into this category. Eat more vegetables, fruit, lean meats, and whole grains instead of processed foods""these are tastier, will leave you feeling full longer, and are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that will keep your body healthy without adding to your weight. A good weight loss tip is to substitute a candy bar or a beer with a small piece of dark or gourmet chocolate or a glass of red wine""these taste just as good (or even better!) but have more health benefits.

Exercise as the key to effective at home weight loss

Diets alone won"t work if you"re trying to lose weight. You need to have both a good diet and an exercise regimen for weight loss. Simply cutting back on calories or following the latest celebrity diet won"t do. Going on a diet signals your body that it needs to conserve calories. By eating less food, your body thinks that food is scarce. To counteract this, your body slows down its metabolism and burns less calories, making it even harder to lose weight if you go on a diet.

However, exercising prevents your body"s metabolism from slowing down. With the proper weight loss exercises, you can even speed up your metabolism even if you"re on a diet. These weight loss exercises don"t require expensive gyms or complicated equipment. You just have to do some form of cardiovascular exercise three times a week, for thirty minutes to an hour each time. Just do something that gets your heart pumping and your blood flowing! It can be as simple as a brisk walk around the neighborhood. You don"t even have to jog; in fact, brisk walking is even better as it burns almost as much calories as jogging, but has a much lower impact when it comes to putting stress on your joints. If walking"s not your thing, there"s cycling, aerobics, or dancing. Even a pick-up game of basketball or a tennis match against your friends will do a lot to get you losing weight. If you"re conscious about other people seeing you exercise, jumping rope, aerobics, or dancing can easily be done in your own home.

For really effective weight loss, however, cardiovascular exercise should be alternated with weight or resistance training. Do cardiovascular exercise on one day, and then do resistance training the next. At the most, all the equipment you"ll need is a 1 to 5-lb pair of dumbbells to tone your arms. Squats and lunges can be used for toning your lower body. Crunches can be used to firm up your abs.
