How To Look Up Who Called You

By: Richard Cunningham

So you got an obscene phone call from someone. There's breathing on the line, or they curse or they even start demanding sexual favors. Gross. Your first reaction might be to call the police. The trouble is that the police often won't do anything unless you know who it is or they are constantly calling you. Or maybe you saw a number on the caller ID and you want to know who it is.

Often times, you could get a call from a bank and not know that's who called. The reason is that a great many phone numbers today are based on outgoing calls only. You could call the number back and not be able to speak to anyone because the number was an outgoing call. What you really need to do is a reverse phone lookup.

So what is reverse phone lookup anyway? It's actually a very simple concept. If you dial 411 and ask for a number for someone, they will ask for the name and address of the person that you wish to look up. The trouble is that when you call them if all you have is a phone number and no name or address, you can't find out who it was.

But there are special web sites where you can punch in the phone number and they will tell you who called you. It's the reverse of dialing 411, so it's called reverse call lookup.

A simple Google search for reverse phone lookup will get you lots of web sites with all kinds of results available. Most of the services will however charge a fee. Some charge a fee per service for every time that you check a number and others offer you unlimited lookups for a certain amount of time.

There are a handful of them which are free as well, but I have found that the directories they can help you lookup are not quite as comprehensive.

You can also find all kinds of other services where you will be able to find additional information about the person who called you, including public records, things like bankruptcies, divorce, all kinds of stuff. You should be aware however that this information, while it is publicly available may not necessarily be used for public purposes since it could be considered slander if you make it public.

Consult an attorney if you need further information on this. As for reverse phone lookup, just check your favorite web browser. There are plenty of sites available with the information.
