How To Light A Cigar With A Cigar Lighter

By:

Of all the questions asked by first time cigar smokers, the most common is how to use a cigar lighter to get their stogie burning. Lighting a cigar is as much an art as a necessity: it requires knowhow, patience, the right tools and a bit of style, as well. Of course, the first step to lighting a cigar has nothing to do with flame. Actually, you have to cut the cap (the closed end) in order to draw through the cigar and get it to light. Therefore, you need quality cigar cutters to help you begin the process.

Cut the cap about 1/8th of an inch from the end, or at the top of the cap's shoulder (where the curve begins to flatten out). Once the cap is cut, you can begin the lighting process. First, you will need to hold the cigar over your lighter, without allowing the flames to touch the filler or the wrapper. What you are doing is called toasting, or warming, and is designed to help the cigar light more evenly. If you need a quality butane lighter here, you can find combinations that include cigar cutters and lighters in a single unit for better convenience.

Butane lighters should be the only flame source you use, unless you opt to use wood shavings. This ensures that your cigar doesn't reek of chemicals, but provides you with the extraordinary smoke that you desire. Now that the cigar has been warmed, you can put it between your lips. Let it hang at an angle (45 degrees or so) and hold it with one hand, grasping your lighter with the other. If you have combination cigar cutters and lighter, watch your fingers during this process. Now, turn the cigar in your mouth, while bringing the flame close enough that a smooth draw on the cigar brings the flame into contact with the tobacco.

Continue turning the cigar during this process. Once you are sure that the entire cigar has ignited, inspect the foot for unlit areas and reapply your lighter as necessary or breathe on the area to help it ignite. If you are using cigar cutters, you will enjoy a smooth draw from your cigar now: cutters are the best way to ensure even airflow, as wedge cutters and scissors can leave a ragged hole behind. Now, sit back and enjoy your smoke!
