How To Know When Your Toddler Might Be Ready For Potty Training

By:

No matter when you finally decide to bite the bullet and toilet train your toddler, it is best for everyone under your roof if you make sure the entire adventure is a positive experience. When handled well, toilet training draws you closer to your child and allows you to learn more about both them and yourself.

Every child is different, and of course the training is more work for some than others, but those differences do not necessarily need to cause the experience to be any less rewarding. As with most things for us parents, a little bit of suffering through the difficulty one day will help us to wade through easier waters on the next.

The most important thing you can do to find the potty training finish line with the fewest amounts of headaches is to exhibit large quantities of patience. Regardless of when your child is ready to start the process of potty training, they will be acquiring a brand new skill and it is important to realize that not everyone is able to absorb new information at the same exact pace. If things are not proceeding according to your original expectations, then you must consider the possibility that it is time to take another look at your habits.

Maybe your child is ready and you are not. Take a few minutes to take a long look at your schedule. Are you preoccupied with other projects, conflicts, or simply living a full life in general? Starting the potty training process is an important decision for the entire family and must be approached with care.

Also keep in mind, if you have more than one child, you will always be preaching to audience in plurality. This renders each of your decisions even more important. What we do with our actions will always mean more than our words and silence can sometimes be our best weapon.

Our children want to please us. It is up to us to tell them how.

Using the restroom is a necessary function, not a time to bond. Once our child has language, it is easier to move in the appropriate direction, but even without a wealth of words, we can still step forward. Successful potty training is all about what the parents choose, and when and how they choose to do it. A few difficult days will soon drift into memory and set the stage for future success. In the meantime, think of everything you have gained - a hundred dollars a month in diapers is only the beginning.

The operative word is training. Yes, all children are capable of learning, but it is us who must decide what we are willing to teach them and when we recognize they are ready to start the process.

Chances are, it is earlier than many of us ever think.
