For you to be able to pay your taxes, it is important that you know what your tax code is. This is also very important because it will also help you go a long way in ensuring that you are able to determine whether you are being under taxed or overtaxed. In this article, we are going to put some effort so that we can tell how you will be able to know what your code is, and what it actually means to have that particular tax code.

If you are one person that is employed, then you need to know that it is your employer who will use the tax code to determine what amount of money he should forward to the HMRC. The first step that goes on when the HMRC is determining what your tax code will be is to take all tax-free allowances that you are entitled to. Let us assume that the only allowance that you are entitled to is the basic personal allowance. This allowance currently stands at 7,475 pounds (for the 2011-2012 financial year.) you do not have any other allowances such as the child allowances and the blind person's allowance.

Now, once this amount is determined, it is divided by the number 10, to get 747. a letter is the added after this figure to help in further classifying your income, and your income type.

If you are earning more than just the basic personal allowances, then all these allowances are taken up and added. Great care is also taken to make sure part-time income, and income from self-employment is also taken into consideration.
