How To Know How Old Is Your Roof

If you are not sure how old if your roof, we will share with you a way to estimate the age of your roof. You will have to measure the width of the shingle slots. The slots in a shingles measure 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch wide at about 70 degrees. The slots create the characteristics shingle tabs and allow for expansion. The slots widen over time because the edges, which are not cover by the mineral granules, deteriorate.

Following are 3 measurements that are commonly used by professional roofers to estimate the life time of your roof:

1.If you are able to fit a regular wooden pencil between the slots, the shingles are 10 years old or less and still have life in them. Depending on the shingles that are currently install, the shingles could have from 5 to year more of life. They might need a some repair; if the nail are sticking out or if some shingles are curl up but those are easy and not very expensive fixes.

2.If the slots that have grown about 1/2 wide or about the width of your thumb, this indicates that the shingles are near to the end of their life and should be replace soon. In this stage is when you should be budgeting and planning for the roof replacement before the roof is completely out of granules and you will have no more time. Depending on the area where you live, you could have about a year or more to replace your roof. Remember that is important that you take your time and shop around to get the best deal possible

3.If the shingles are 3/4 inch or more, the roof has exceeded its normal life. At this point, most likely your will have roof leaks or even some missing shingles. The repairs will not be possible anymore because they will be very expensive and the best option is to replace the whole roof. If wait until your roof is at his point, you will have to replace within a month or less living you with less time to shop around.

Inspectors recommend to take the measurements in the morning before the sun has warmed the shingles this will provide a more accurate measurement. Remember that your safety is first and that if you do are not comfortable of doing it yourself you could call a professional roofer who can help.
