How To Keep Guests From Smoking In Your Home Without Being Rude

By:

Usually when you have guests in your home you want them to feel as comfortable as possible and it is probably important to you to make them feel welcome, but there are exceptions to this rule. For many homeowners smoking inside the house is strictly off limits and from time to time this can be a problem. How do you still invite people over that smoke cigarettes without having to break your own rule just to accommodate them?

When people come to the home of someone else they also want to be made to feel welcome, but they also have to understand they they are just visiting and they do not actually live there. If they are close friends or even a relative stranger, they should still have the good graces to wipe their feet at the front door, not sit drinks on your finer furniture, not use foul language, and never drink so much alcohol that you must ask them to leave. These are just common courtesies that any guest should observe unless they might have been raised in a barn somewhere.

Guests that are courteous will ask to use your bathroom before wandering all over your home on their own. They will wait until you offer them a drink of some kind and not go into your refrigerator without permission. Normally, people with good manners will also ask if it is alright if they smoke a cigarette, cigar, or pipe before they light one up. But when you have company in your home, you can not always count on them being courteous. Sometimes you might make someone feel too at home and they just might light up without asking. What should you do when you prefer that they not smoke inside? Actually, it is pretty simple. You just politely ask them not to.

To avoid this problem in the first place, you might want to place a nicely designed plaque or sign for your front porch that says please, no smoking inside. This will let any visitor know that you do not allow smoking in your home without your having to ever say a word. If you are giving a party, you can tell guests as they arrive where you have established a smoking area for them outside, perhaps in the back yard where you have placed a receptacle for their butts. We want all visitors to feel welcome, but that does not mean that we have to give to things like smoking in the home when we prefer not to have it. Just remember to be courteous yourself when you let them know and usually most smokers will not be offended at all.
