How To Keep Birds From Restaurant Patios

Regrettably, outdoor restaurants make ideal habitats for birds. They provide shelter, protection from predators and ample food supply. Because in addition to the food spilling out of trashcans and dipsy-dumpsters, there are the food scraps left on and underneath tables and chairs. Pest birds have even been known to snatch food right out of a child's hands. And unless one clears and wipes the table immediately after customers leave, birds will pick at what's left. Worse yet, they may leave disease-carrying droppings on tables, chairs, and umbrellas. All of which must be constantly cleaned and disinfected.

In and around most outdoor restaurants, pest birds usually nest in elevated areas near the food supply. That means, they'll most likely lay claim to rooftops, eaves, parapet walls and sometimes in signage. Fortunately there are things a restaurant owner or manager can do to keep pest birds from invading a restaurant when spring arrives.

To keep pigeons, sparrows, gulls, starlings or crows at bay, many restaurants have installed a low-profile, electrical track system. These electric tracks are barely visible and they will discourage even the most stubborn bird from landing on high perches around eating areas. Once they set foot on these electrified tracks, they will hop off almost immediately never to return.

The low profile electric bird tracks measure 1/4-inch at their highest point and they come in four colors--grey, stone, black and terracotta--to blend in with most color schemes.

The tracks mount easily on ledges, rooflines, parapet walls, beams, eaves and signs. The flat track is fabricated on a flexible U.V.-protected PVC base that readily conforms to curved or straight surfaces (they can bend a full 360 degrees without compromising the product's integrity).

While there are a number of electric track bird control systems available, the best flat track system features a patented "anti-arcing" design and is powered by an A.C. charger or solar charger for added flexibility.

Beyond treating ledges where birds are landing around outdoor eating areas, there are a number of different products available to help keep birds away.

Outdoor sound deterrents such as the Bird Chase Sonic are idea for large open spaces and can be programmed to the type of bird such as pigeons, sparrows or gulls. These units use predator and bird calls to let birds know there is danger in the area. Many waterfront resturants have had great success using the Bird Chase Sonic to deter birds.

Visual deterrents such as the Repeller 360, Hawk Decoys, Diverters and other products can be placed around eating areas to scare birds off.

Bird Gel can be used on flat horizontal surfaces to create a surface birds wont like landing on. Bird gel is ideal for hard to treat areas like umbrellas and light fixtures.

Keep in mind that the best way to stop pest birds from invading your restaurant is to use an integrated approach. Treat perches where birds are landing with ledge products such as Bird Gel, Bird Spikes, or Bird Jolt Flat Track. Use visual deterrents to let birds know the area is unsafe. Make sure trash areas are cleaned and secured, and routinley sweep away food scraps from outdoor areas. Taking a proactive approach to your bird problem will make it that much easier to solve!
