How To Join The Army

By:

The Army selection process consists of a number of a different stages. Throughout each stage, which will be explored shortly, it is crucial that the applicant demonstrates they have the ability to become a professional and competent soldier. After all, the Army motto "Be the best" is not installed lightly.

The first stage in the application process is for the aspiring soldier to make contact with the Armed Forces Careers Advisor. During this initial stage they will have the opportunity to discuss the different Regiments/Trades and branches that are potentially open to them.

Once the initial fact finding meeting is complete, and the candidate has received a presentation about life in the Army, they will then be required to sit the British Army Recruit Battery Test, or BARB as it is more commonly called. The BARB is a series of timed psychometric tests that are designed to assess the applicants ability to carry out set tasks under strict timed conditions. The BARB test consists of Reasoning tests, Distant Number tests, a Check Letters Test and a Symbol Rotation test. The pass mark for the BARB is 26. However, in order to have a large number of different career options the applicant will need to score as highly as possible.

Once the BARB test is complete the candidate will be able to discuss the scores with the Careers Advisor before being invited to attend the Army Development and Selection Centre (ADSC). The ADSC is basically a 3 day event where the potential candidate has the opportunity to taste Army life. It is also a further opportunity for the Army to assess the applicant using a number of different testing methods.

One of the very first stages of the ADSC requires the candidate to give a 5 minute presentation about themselves. This can naturally be a nerve wracking experience so it is best that he/she prepares one before they attend the ADSC.

Candidates are also required to carry out a number of different strength tests and also a 1.5 mile timed run. The times for the run are reduced greatly for the Parachute Regiment.

One of the final stages of the ADSC involves an interview under formal conditions. The applicant will be assessed against their motivations for wanting to join the Army and how well prepared they are for selection. The most effective way to prepare for a career in the Army is to try and match the assessable qualities at every available opportunity.
