How To Install Your Kitchen Cabinets

By:

Knowing how to install your kitchen cabinets correctly can make all the difference between having attractive and functional cabinets, and a self-made nightmare. Even if you choose discount cabinets for your kitchen, they should be hung with care. If you're not completely convinced about your measuring and hanging skills--the cabinets need to be level and flush as a complete set--you might want to call in a qualified professional.

People often make little mistakes, which end up damaging the existing walls and the new cabinets. Take a slow, measured approach when you install your new cabinets; you don't want to forget to attach them to studs or fail to align the doors. If you don't align the entire set plumb and level, the cabinets can end up looking terrible and doors may fail to open--or swing open on their own when you least expect it.

How to Install Your Kitchen Cabinets Right the First Time

Ultimately, it doesn't matter whether you've bought discount cabinets or more expensive, semi-custom models. You still need to install the upper wall cabinets first to set the line and ensure a snug fit across the entire set.

Locate the studs as you mark the cabinet lines on the wall. You'll need to drill rear holes in the cabinets to match the locations. Set them securely with washers and drywall screws. Be sure your layout includes precise cutouts for appliances, sinks, vent hoods, and windows. Ready the base cabinets on the floor, upside down, and clamp them together. Attach filler strips before attempting to raise them to the fittings. Each unit, top or base, needs at least four screwed attachments on two separate studs.

Remember above all: level and plumb! With a little patience and forethought, you can install your new kitchen cabinets and enjoy a well organized, beautiful kitchen.
