PVC gaskets are an important part of many different things, whether you are talking about your industrial machinery or even smaller parts within your own home. Knowing how to replace and install PVC gaskets yourself can save you a lot of money in repairs, especially since the job is really so easy to do!
How PVC Gaskets Work
Before you learn how to install or replace PVC gaskets, it helps to have a basic understanding of how they work. This will make it much easier for you to be able to install them properly because you know how they are supposed to function.
The basic idea behind any gasket is to provide a sealed joint between two pieces. You'll find gaskets in just about any home device, from toilets, to hot tubs, to windows and doors. PVC gaskets are usually used for anything having to do with moisture, so you will find them used in places like toilets, faucets, and bathtubs. There are two different types of PVC gaskets:
foam and
rubber. Rubber is probably the more commonly used of the two, although there are uses for each.
Replacing or Installing PVC Gaskets
Changing a gasket itself is relatively simple. Often you will find that you are replacing an entire piece rather than just the gasket itself. For example, changing a toilet flange involves having a new PVC gasket, but it is part of the flange, and usually you will not need to replace just the gasket. In other cases, like with a hot tub, you will find it helpful to know how to replace the gasket.
To replace a PVC gasket on a hot tub if it's leaking, follow these simple steps:
- Completely disconnect the tub from the electricity. Leaks that are directly under the pump are usually related to the gasket that connects the pump to the tub itself.
- Simply loosen the fittings and remove the leaking gasket. Put in the new one and retighten.
Replacing most gaskets is as simple as this. PVC gaskets are usually of the hardened variety, although some are more flexible and come in coils. It all just depends on exactly what kind of job you are doing.
