How To Install Hardwood Floors

For homeowners who will be installing the floors on their own, pre-finished planks are the way to go. For unfinished floors, it is best to hire a professional, since they will need to be sanded with a drum sander. The sander can leave grooves in the floor if not perfectly done.

It is a good idea to stack any wood planks inside of your home for a few days before the planned installation. This way, any swelling or shrinkage which may occur will have happened beforehand. Hardwood planks must be placed across the joists in the floor.

Pull the shoe moulding off carefully, look at the sub-flooring, and clean up all debris before beginning the install. Next, roll out strips of a vapor barrier paper and let at least 4 inches overlap. Staple the vapor barrier down to the sub-floor. You have to use 15 pound tar paper or felt, which costs around $12 a roll. Draw off the location of the joists with a pencil.

Place a long board against your longest wall, and prep it for pilot holes, by utilizing a chalk line. Drill these holes in the board, through the sub-floor and into the joist. Before setting each nail with a nail set, you will have to face nail the first plank. For the first row of wood, the groove side needs to be turned to the wall.

Utilizing wood putty that matches your hardwood flooring is a fantastic way to mend each nail hole as you go. After the work is complete, it is not easy to identify all of these holes. After face nailing the entire first row and patching, set up the boards for the next row.

Notice how the wood planks are made to lock together. Utilizing the same methods for every row and cover the whole floor with the wood planks. Be careful to leave a 3/8 inch space between the last planks and the wall, in case the wood swells. Replace shoe moulding and clean the floor carefully.
