How To Install A Gas Line

By:

Even the mention of gas line installation to some sends shivers up their spine. While the though of putting in gas lines can be somewhat intimidating, it is really rather easy. To lower the cost, one may choose to put them in by themself. With a few simple steps it is safe and cost effective.

The very first thing that needs to be done in order to install new gas lines, is to close the valve that allows the gas to your home. The standard natural gas line valve is a ball valve. What this means is that this valve never has a tighten down to it. It turns forever. So, get a wrench and make a one quarter turn to the valve. When the gas is entirely closed off from entering the pipes the valve will be perpendicular to the pipe with the two holes lining up perfectly.

The next step is to remove the cover on the gas line (or the meter if there are no gas lines) and to cover the exposed threads with joint compound. A joint connector or an elbow joint is then installed on the end with the joint compound and tightened down. The next thing to do in gas line installation is to continue adding pipes and elbows until the line is entirely installed.

When installing the pipes and elbow joints, make sure that joint compound is used at every new addition to the line. Also make sure that each addition is sufficiently tightened with the wrench to assure that there will be no gas leaks. Once all the piping that is needed is installed, one will need a gas cap. This is for the final piece to the line. Add joinnt compound to the threads of the final pipe and apply the cap to the line. Tighten it down and make sure it is secure.

The final step in the process is to turn the gas back on and check for any leaks. Before reopening the gas valve, make a mixture of dish soap and water. Apply this mixture to the connections on the new gas line. Then turn the gas on and inspect the entire line for any bubbles. The bubbles from the soap and water mixture will indicate a loose or leaking fixture. To stop the leak tighten the attachment. If this does not work, take that joint off and reinstall it.
