How To Improve Your Website Copy

By:

Content is absolutely crucial to the success of a website for the vast majority of online users and every search engine.

The content of your site needs to be relevant to the user, displayed in an easily identifiable and consistent manner, with a structure that is quickly understandable, free of jargon and is easy to scan.

Below is a set of usability guidelines that every website should follow in order to improve the quality of their content.

1. Provide an appropriate level of product category content for each user type/profile.

2. Facilitate scanning with clearly structured content. Use well positioned headings and small readable paragraphs with short sentences (e.g. describe the main idea of a paragraph in the first sentence, sparingly emphasising significant items with bold text in a familiar font at an appropriate size). Use mixed case text for faster reading.

3. Provide printable pages with widths that print properly if users are likely to print one or more pages or a download option (e.g. a user manual, terms and conditions or directions).

4. Display information in a usable format that does not require conversion by the user (e.g. provide a currency converter for international customers, provide explanations of jargon, define acronyms and abbreviations and use sparingly).

5. To enable rapid reading of prose text, black text should be used on high-contrasting plain backgrounds free of patterns or textures.

6. Opt for affirmative statements over negative statements when writing instructions.

7. Use text style to emphasize and highlight the importance of a word or short phrase. Highlighted information should not be highlighted in more than one way on a single page.

8. Important information should not look like a banner advertisement or contain gratuitous decoration.

9. Images should only be used where critical to the website and convey intended message to users (e.g. when full size representation is not critical use thumbnails to preview images).

10. Do not display unsolicited pop-up windows or graphics.

11. Web design should accommodate for commonly used browsers.

If you want to improve the quality and effectiveness of your online content then you should employ the services of a reputable web design agency with experience in delivering proven results.

Any quality agency will have a team of web designers and content writers that can work together to produce a site which will encourage visitors to buy products and services.

Web design companies should also have extensive search engine optimisation knowledge so that your website can be found through specific keyword searches.
