How To Give A Brilliant Keynote Speech

By:

Making a public speech can be terrfiying, in particular if it's something you have never done before. The need for a keynote speech can arise in any event or situation. As a common example, if you are best man at a wedding. Stop for a moment if the prospect of making a keynote speech terrifies you. Enjoy a few tips on delivering a great speech.

Know your subject matter

Who wants to listen to someone waffle on about something they don't know about? Being serious, it's important to feel comfortable about what you are talking about. Let's face it, if you are the best man at a wedding, you should probably know about the groom already. However getting to know the bride although difficult, is worth it for delivering a good speech. If you are a business speaker at a business event, know your subject matter. If you are giving a promotional speech on a product, know the product inside out before hand. You may wish to gain hands on experience with the product by testing it directly. The internet is a good basis for research. Any well known product or service will have a complimentary website. For generic products or services, why not try Youtube or Wikipedia? If the product is well known, try Wikipedia or even Youtube for further information.

Research the audience

Interacting with your audience is super important. If you stood and just talked for an hour, you'll bore your audience. They won't get your message, because they won't be listening. With this, do try and avoid giving a bad speech. Do some research on the audience before you come to making the speech. What companies do they work for? Can you find any common interests? Is there anything you can help them with? Get the audience participating and helping you along. Use visual aids if necessary. Cliched as it may be, what about using Powerpoint? Sometimes it can be a difficult choice to decide whether to allow the audience to participate. What sort of audience are they? Try and pick the more confident audience member. Try not to pick out members of the audience that are clearly nervous and don't want to be picked on. We've all been there!

Work for your employer

Working for your employer is key. If you need to sell to them, make sure you do it as best and non-aggressively as possible. If you are promoting their product, make sure you do them justice. If you don't, you probably wont be making a keynote speech again in a hurry.

Practising equals best preparation

Being unprepared is the worse thing you can be when giving a keynote speech. The most skilled keynote speakers will practise over and over again. How about using cue cards? Memorise the speech as best you can. If you lose your way, don't fret, use your cue cards. Whatever your speech, good luck.
