How To Get Your 'mr' Right....

By:

There are a lot of people out there that blame their weight gain or lack of weight loss on their slow metabolism and maybe for some its true, but there are ways to speed up your metabolism naturally.
Let me just remind you of how and what your metabolism does for you.
Your bodys metabolic rate (MR) is determined by the energy your body gets from the foods you consume and when I say energy I dont just mean the get up and go type, there are other requirements your body has for energy such as; cell renewal, digestion, hormone release and brain activity to name a few.
Ok so these tend to be put under the heading resting metabolic rate (RMR) which is the metabolic rate your body runs at just to say alive here is a simple calculation so you can work out yours.
If you are under 31 multiply your weight in kilograms by 14.7 and then add 496
If you are over 31 multiply your weight in kilograms by 8.7 and then add 829

(To convert pounds into kilograms divide your weight in pounds by 2.2)

So thats the basic, obviously your activity levels will add to this number. To work out your MR a bit closer to what they are on a daily average multiply that number by the following (which ever applies to you the closest);
If you are mostly inactive multiply your RMR by 1.4
If you are mainly seated during the day but take some exercise Id say moderately active multiply your RMR by 1.7
If you exercise more than 4 times a week within an organised exercise programme then multiply your RMR by 2
Now as I said before - doing exercise can help up your MR and help you lose more weight. The more exercise you do the faster your body will burn off the calories you are feeding it (remember calories = energy)
However you must also remember that your body will need to rest between exercise days to help your body recover and rebuild. If you exercise on a regular basis during the rest periods your MR will stay roughly the same so you will continue to burn calories and lose weight even whilst you sleep.
There is also a very important fact which should also be taken note of and that is that when you are exercising you are building your muscles (even if its just walking) and muscles weigh more than fat. So maybe a good idea is to try measuring yourself weekly or fortnightly rather than depending on the bathroom scales.
Ok, so we know how to work out our RMR and get a rough idea of our BMR. We know about the bonuses of exercise. Is there anything else we could do to help our bodies over come the weight problem?
Well yes there is. Again its all natural and available to everyone.
We can help ourselves by feeding our bodies the correct foods. Our MR increases during the digestion of foods (regardless of how or bad they are for us although when eating foods that our fattening and bad for us we are cancelling out the good MR increase with the bad large calorie content), it is therefore recommended that we graze (eat little and often) instead of gorge (eat large but few meals a day). It is important to know that even after just 5 hours with out food our bodies starts to believe that it is being starved and will start to decrease its metabolism. This is why it is so important to eat breakfast because if you dont your body is more likely to keep anything consumed as fat rather than use it to boast your metabolism.
