How To Get Through To Your Teenager About Drug Risks

By:

Though we want to be a friend to our teens, with the temptation for drug experimentation, it's important to show that you are the adult. If your kids are in high school, they may be dealing with inner conflicts about this issue socially. Drugs or alcohol can be present at parties, after dances at school and available after sports practice sessions.

Let your teens know that you too had this type of exposure and temptation growing up. Talk about ways you resisted it and try to relate to them so they know you understand the conflicts that can arise. If you had a drug or alcohol problem, let them know why you had fallen into it and regrets you had due to missed opportunities.

Tell them they can call you anytime for a ride if they are in an uncomfortable situation at a gathering with peers. Talk about probation, drug court, juvenile detention and other consequences so they know how things could mushroom.

It's been in the news that some teens use narcotic pain killers and cough medicine to get a buzz or high feeling. If you have prescription pain medication in the home, don't let this be easy for them to find. Check your medicine cabinet to see what you have and don't let it get into the wrong hands. Make a list of all the medicines in your cabinet, who takes it, and what is it for. Prescription drugs should be stashed somewhere where they cant easily find it.

Aside from that, there are other things that you can do like talking to the parents of the childs friends so that you both can take a look after your children well. Also, set a good example to your kids that they can follow. Be responsible and show them the right things to do. By setting a good example, they are more likely to follow you and be confident in confiding to you.

When you hear accounts of others that have gone down the wrong path due to drugs or alcohol, bring this into a conversation in an educational way. Talk about the pressures the person was under and discuss with them healthier coping skills to use. Let your kids know you can talk to them and the importance of not letting inner anxiety build up. With these, your child will be in the right direction all their lives.
