How To Get Rid Of Stubborn Age Spots

By:

Unfortunately, if you have hit age 40, you have probably found at least one age spot somewhere on your body. People are more prone to get age spots on their hands, face, and arms, as these are the areas of the body that are most often exposed to the sun. And, age spots are generally caused by over exposure to the sun. (This means that if you are lucky enough never to have found an age spot on yourself, staying out of the sun or protecting yourself while exposed to the sun can prevent them from showing up!)
Unfortunately, there are no immediate cures for age spots. If you want to get rid of them, it is going to take a little time, as they are similar to scars and do not fade overnight. One of the most important first steps to take when attempting to treat your age spots is to limit further exposure to the sun. Of course, since no one can completely eliminate sun exposure, the best way to do this is to invest in a high quality sun screen.
In recent years, the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids to treat age spots has exploded. These acids work by allowing dead skin cells to fall away, and thereby allowing new skin cells to form. Because age spots are the result of years of skin damage, allowing new skin cells to replace the old, damaged ones is a highly effective treatment. The benefits of Alpha Hydroxy Acids may not be immediate, but they can be dramatic, and last long-term.
An additional OTC treatment for age spots is products containing Retinoids, which are synthetically derived from vitamin A. Retinoid rich products work in much the same manner as those containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids; by encouraging the production of new skin cells to replace the older, damaged ones.
Finally, if you are looking for more immediate, dramatic results, you may want to consider a chemical peel (which is usually performed in a dermatologists office). Chemical peels, however, are extremely damaging to the skin, and obtain their results by forcing the damaged skin to regenerate itself. While effective, many people do not wish to damage otherwise healthy skin in order to eliminate blemishes
